Reset the delimiters used with Excel

When you save a worksheet from Excel it will automatically use commas for a delimited file - a comma separated value (.csv) file. Windows provides a way to reset this default setting. Go to Start . . . Control Panel. Click on the item, Region and Language. At the bottom right click on 'Additional Settings'.

On the numbers tab you'll see that you that there is an option to set the List Separator.

Changing this value to another delimiter such as a tilde or pipe will cause your .csv files to be exported differently:

However be aware that after you've done this when entering formulas in Excel you will now need to replace commas with the new value:

Excel formula to find if list of numbers falls in range of numbers listed in two columns

You can use the SUMPRODUCT formula to check and see if a list of numbers in one column falls within a range of numbers given in two other columns. This can come in handy, if for example, you have a list of Bates numbers and want to know if they all fall with PRODBEG and PRODEND ranges in a document production. In this example, we have a list of numbers in column A, and ranges of produced documents in columns D and E. Column F simply contains a reference to be returned by the formula. So as you can see this formula:

=SUMPRODUCT((A1>=$D$1:$D$10)*(A1<=$E$1:$E$10)*$F$1:$F$10)

Filtering for line breaks

You can filter cells in an Excel spreadsheet so that they only include those with line breaks.

1. In a cell directly below a column of data that you want to filter, press ALT + ENTER to input a single line break and nothing else in a cell.

2. Go to an Excel filter and select Text Filter . . . Custom Filters.

3. In the first custom filter, pick contains and then use the drop down menu on the right to choose the row you created containing only a line break. Set the Boolean operator to And.

4. In the second custom filter, pick does not equal, and again use the drop down menu to select the row you created containing on a line break.

5. Your column will be filtered to only entries with line breaks.
