LITIGATION SUPPORT TIP OF THE NIGHT NO LONGER RECOMMENDS USING THE KASPERSKY PASSWORD CHECKER OR ANY OTHER KASPERSKY PRODUCTS. KASPERSKY IS BEING INVESTIGATED BY THE FBI. AS THE NEW YORK TIMES HAS REPORTED KASPERSKY IS SUSPECTED FOR USING ITS ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE TO STEAL CLASSIFIED GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS.

I'VE LEARNED MY LESSON, AND I'M SURE YOU WILL TOO. LITTLE HOPE THAT THE MORON WHO IS CURRENTLY PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WILL LEARN THIS LESSON AS WELL.

If you're trying to find the best virus protection software available, consider checking out the site of AV Comparativers. This is an independent organization which tests 21 major virus protection programs and shows how they peform in real world tests (crawling software searches out malicious sites to test the programs against); how well the programs find malicious files after they are on a computer; how they affect system performance; how they do at malware removal; implementing anti-phishing protection; and how well they provide firewall protection when a computer is attached to a public network.

AV Comparatives usually issues reports twice a year and provides online bar graphs illustrating how competing applications stack up against one another. See this bar graph showing how well different software does in finding malicious files:

While all of the programs reach a certain baseline above 90% , you want the most effective program, not one like AVG which will fail to find 6% more malicious files than a top program. The above chart can be adjusted to account for different types of tests performed by AV Comparatives during different time periods. See: http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php

Each year AV Comparatives issues an annual report describing how different security programs function, and choosing a Product of the Year. Kaspersky Lab got the award in 2015, but Bit Defender scored just as highly.

In recent years the FBI has held meetings with major law firms due to concern about their networks being a soft target for criminal data theft. Mary Galligan, the head of the cyber security department in the FBI's New York office was quoted by Bloomberg on this problem. “As financial institutions in New York City and the world become stronger, a hacker can hit a law firm and it’s a much, much easier quarry,” Your firm should have a diagram of its network and detailed computer logs.

Bitlocker is a Windows program used for encrypting hard drives. If you receive a Bitlocker encrypted hard drive, you will not be able to access it unless your PC has a Trusted Platform Module chip (a TPM).

To check and see if you have TPM chip, go to Start, type run, and then in the run program enter:

tpm.msc

. . . the Trusted Platform Module Management will open. If your PC does not have the TPM chip, you should see this:

If your PC does have a TPM chip but it hasn't been fully installed, you will need to click the option to initialize and reboot your PC.
