Differences Between FTP and Managed File Transfer (MFT)

Managed File Transfer (MFT) has been introduced recently as a substitute for File Transfer Protocol (FTP) in order to deal with a higher volume of data and the need for more secure data transfers.

MFT allows for multi-factor authentication; encryption of the data while it is at rest; and has provisions to ensure that data delivery occurs. MFT will usually support multiple file transfer protocols. It also allows for non-repudiation, which provides proof of the origin of data, and user authentication using methods like LDAP and Active Directory. MFT provides detailed logging of data transfers.

MFT programs and SaaS are often designed with specific data security protocols in mind including HIPAA, ISO-27001, and GDPR.
