Windows Command to Copy Text to Clipboard

You can use a Windows command to copy the contents of a text file to your clipboard.

In this example, we have a text file saved in a folder named, 'FooFolder' at the root of the C drive.

Press SHIFT+CTRL and right click in this folder, and then select 'Open command window here' from the menu that appears.

Enter the command 'clip' , followed by the name of the text file in this folder whose contents you want put on the clipboard. The file name should be preceded by the the less then sign.

As you can see the contents of the text file are on the clipboard and can be pasted into a Word document.

Command to Remove Empty Directories

You can use the command, rmdir to remove empty directories. This command followed by a path to a directory that is empty, will automatically remove the folder.

Windows Command Sort to sort on specified character in text file

If you want to sort all of the data in a text on a specified character number from the beginning of each line, use the command SORT in this format:

sort /+3 sort2.txt >list.txt

So if we begin with a file like this:

. . . and then we enter the command, whether to give the results in command prompt or write them to a text file . . .

We get the lines sorted alphabetically by the third character on each line:
