The National Software Reference Library (NSRL) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) consists of digital signatures of system files. At this location, individual file names can be looked up.

If the file you are examining has a hash value that is equal to that in the NSRL you can confident that it can be removed from a data set being reviewed in an electronic discovery project.
