National Software Reference Library (NSRL)

The Tip of the Night for May 9, 2015 discussed, De-NISTing, the removal of system files from sets reviewed for electronic discovery. The National Software Reference Library (NSRL) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) consists of digital signatures of system files. The full index listing hash values for each system files has been posted here.

At this location, individual file names can be looked up.

If the file you are examining has a hash value that is equal to that in the NSRL you can confident that it can be removed from a data set being reviewed in an electronic discovery project.
